One of the things I love is checking out other blogs especially by seasoned crafters is how they manipulate the products to make interesting effects such as the use of misting and layering. Misting refers to the use of ink in spray bottles that will give this misty chalky or glimmer effect. I will take a little bit more in a later post based on my very small collection of colour and glimmer mists. Most of the time, I use the glimmer mist but recently, I have learnt a different technique in the use of colour mist.
One thing for sure when you use either one or both is to have tissue paper on standby. Yes, it can get messy.
I picked up this misting technique where I will mist on the patterned paper, without using a stencil mask, and then go over it with a white colour mist before dabbing on tissue paper on it. It will give this softer colour effect. I used this technique for a notebook cover I designed the day before.
See the red blotches? No, they're not mistakes though they can be a pretty good mistake cover up. Sometimes I use a mask to create interesting patterns when I mist or I simply mist it straight on to the patterned paper and this time round, I used the white colour mist from Studio Calico. As mentioned earlier, I dabbed on tissue lightly to blend in the colours and give the bright red a softer look.
I was inspired by a layout done by a very talented scrapbooker. I think she goes beyond the usual crafting of a scrapbooker venturing into mixed media art. I also used a layering effect and as one of the crafters mentioned, her philosophy when crafting is to layer till she can't layer no more. Uhm, I don't know many layers that would be but to me, layering different kinds of patterned papers together, whether they're made from vellum or cut out details, if you can master the layering technique, you can go pretty far in your design technique.
I also like to use a short cut which is making use of the ephemera pack or chipboard pieces in a pack. This is simply because one, they're value for money and two, it's easier to co-ordinate and nowadays different manufacturers like to offer different goodies in a pack which may not just include die cut pieces. Lazy cardmakers and scrapbookers, rejoice!
The one that I used above is from the Crate Paper DIY Ephemera pack.
