Card Tutorial: Handmade Card with Window Frame & Bunting

I've always been in awe of the skills of many other crafters and I've learnt and adapted many skills from them. I haven't joined in the 'trend' of applying to join Design Team. Some seem to be on a roll.  I think it's good that they get to gain international exposure to share their love of crafting and to get hold of these manufacturers' awesome products sent exclusively to them even before these products are released. If they have any other reasons, like to seek fame, get free things or to prove themselves that they have made it in the crafting world, it's their prerogative.

Me? I just love updating this humble blog of mine and my facebook to share with you my past and current projects, whether you read it or not, lol! Sure you may think my skills are not up to par with them but we all have to start from somewhere right? Ed Sheeran started as a busker who crashed in subways and friends' couches and now he has the biggest selling album in the UK. It takes determination and hard work to get to where you are and a burning desire.

Below, I'm sharing with you a tutorial on card making and you can adopt one or two techniques so you yourself can learn and make one for someone special.

Step 1: Paste two patterned papers on the cover of the 4 X 6 card in landscape mode. The top portion is slightly bigger than the bottom paper.

Step 2: If you have an embossing folder and a big shot machine, you can run a square piece of white cardstock paper through the machine after you sandwich it between the folder. If you don't have this machine, you can use any textured white card stock and lightly ink it in distress ink. I used tea dye.

Step 3: These are my chosen embellishments. A swirl chipboard from Prima Marketing, flower die cuts from Kaisercraft & Crate Paper (you can also fussy cut out two different flower shapes from a single floral patterned paper), a line of quote, a length of scrapped paper which I cut the bottom part with a pair of patterned scissors for a fancy edge and lastly, a window frame die cut piece from Kaiser Craft.

Step 4: Place the swirl chipboard in the middle of the card covering the joined part of the patterned papers, layer the frame on top, followed by the flowers which I propped on a small rectangular die cut piece, the fancy-edged paper that I pasted slightly hanging at the edge and the quote on top of the cut paper. To ensure the frame is balanced, you can use foam dots, top and bottom, to prop the frame.

Step 5: Add more embellishments to it. Again using scrap paper, I hand-cut two different sizes of bunting. First, I cut the top part in a semi circular shape, and then cut out the bunting or triangular shaped pattern following the circular shape and paste them across the card.

Other embellishments include a small hot air balloon that I cut out, added a button at the corner, two plastic flower resins diagonally across two corners and pearls on the bunting and the bottom edge of the card.

Step 6 (Finished Card): Add stickles if you want to, at the edge of the frame, and rub some sticklers or glitter on the open areas of the embossed patterned paper followed by liquid pearl in teal on the fancy edged paper. This is optional but if you want to add some shadow to the bottom layered part, u can use a light wash of water colour in co-ordinating colours at the bottom layer and you're done!

Remember that whatever you do, don't give up easily. Back your desires with a faith and believe that one day, you can make it even if things don't go as expected initially. Remember that, those overnight success? Doesn't happen to everybody and you don't know the amount of work that goes behind the scene in order to get to the level of success they are at now. Instead of being jealous of their achievement, concentrate on building success on your own.
